As reported by USNI News, a Paramount Pictures film crew was actually aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) at the same time the Navy began launching F-35C aircraft from the ship alternating with F/A -18E/ F Great. Hornets as an integrated air wing.
Top Gun: The Edge Of Aviation
In fact, as of August 20, six F-35Cs operated aboard Lincoln and the film crew almost certainly got a look at the Lightning II, operating alongside Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers, the E-2 Hawkeye and the C-2 Greyhound.
When asked what role the new planes might play in the film, Michael Singer, vice president of marketing and publicity for Jerry Bruckheimer Films and Television, said that "we are not giving production details at this time."
The Navy was limited in what it could reveal about the filming aboard Lincoln or the role of the sea service in the upcoming movie.
Navy spokesman Lt. Seth Clarke said the level of support the service will provide is still being worked out, but "I can tell you that US Naval Aviators will be flying in this movie."

He added that Lincoln was specifically chosen to film because "the ship's schedule was ideal based on the needs of Paramount films at the time. In addition, the presence of the film crew did not incur any additional costs, logistics or freight the US Navy." Lincoln was required to be at sea to conduct aircraft qualifications for pilots in Carrier Air Wing 7.
Notably, although we reported on August 22 that the Paramount camera crew was aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, details of the operations of the F-35C aboard the same ship were not released until Monday.
Tom Cruise teased the start of filming for the highly anticipated Top Gun sequel on May 31, 2018 with a tweet that included an image of an elderly Captain Pete Mitchell standing in a flight suit with his famous HGU-33 helmet . (which he used to fly his F-14A Tomcat) in his hand.

Tom Cruise's new movie Top Gun: Maverick is a very funny movie. Like its predecessor, it gives the viewer a good feel for what it's like to fly a modern fighter jet. Critics seem to like it quite a bit and current box office receipts suggest that audiences do too.
You should watch the new Top Gun movie for an additional reason. It is probably one of the last of its kind. The introduction of fifth-generation stealth aircraft, the increased sophistication of electronic warfare systems, and the proliferation of advanced unmanned systems, long-range precision missiles, and hypersonic weapons will change the nature of the future battle for air superiority. The days of engaging within visual range with aircraft firing cannons at each other are about to end. So is the need to hit ground air defense.
Top Gun Maverick Matchbox Lockheed Martin F 35 B, New Unopened
The most important factor that changes the nature of air operations is the arrival of so-called fifth generation fighters. The United States leads the world in deploying fifth-generation aircraft with the F-22 and, more importantly, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. This aircraft is not only deployed with the US Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, but is quickly becoming the frontline fighter of the Free World. Ironically, a version of a Russian stealth aircraft, the Su-57, makes an important appearance in the film.
One of the most striking features of Top Gun is the absence (apart from a few seconds at the beginning of the film) of the F-35C, the Navy's flagship of the fifth generation. The new device is currently deployed on aircraft. Some C variants are also flown by the Marine Corps along with its short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant, the F-35B.
Some sources reported that the film's producers chose not to make the F-35C the focal point, as it only comes in a single-seat version. This created cinematic challenges that the director and cameramen could not overcome.
Instead, the filmmakers chose to focus on the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. The F/A-18E/F is a very good multirole fighter. Its features, including a new anti-stealth search and track infrared sensor and an advanced cockpit, make the Super Hornet a worthy companion for the F35C in the carrier air wing.
The Look Of Top Gun: Maverick
In reality, if the F-35 had been the centerpiece of Top Gun, it would have been a completely different and possibly boring movie. There are three good reasons why the F-35 was not used. The first is that with the F-35 there would be no heart-stopping, adrenaline-pumping dogfight scenes. The F-35 was designed to use a combination of stealth, advanced detection and long-range weapons to attack aircraft from beyond the range of its sensors. In Red Flag exercises conducted before the pandemic, F-35s achieved a 20-to-1 kill ratio against a variety of aggressors, even when the scenario involved much larger numbers of adversaries. In previous exercises, the F-35s, used as stealth sensors, have improved the effectiveness of four-generation non-stealth aircraft in both air-to-air operations
